It does help drive traffic to your site. I think the best return on your time is list-building, but even with that there are some people who will follow you on twitter and respond to you there before they would ever read your emails. I have only so much time, and I am working on my blog, spending time learning, doing ad-swaps, and usually there are things I don't even get to, say, article writing in one day, so I have trouble seeing how to work in the social networking aspect.
